Music at South

New!  Scroll down for information about our brand new music series: CityMusic Springfield!

Music is integral to worship at South Church , working to deepen the faith experience, strengthen fellowship and familiarize newcomers with the church. New singers, handbell players and instrumentalists are always welcome in our ensembles. Larry Picard, the Director of Music Ministries, can provide more information and answer questions about participation in the musical life of the church.

Chancel Choir: The Chancel Choir sings every Sunday from September through Memorial Day except the Sunday after Christmas. The Sunday schedule for this ensemble includes a 9 AM rehearsal and the service at 10 AM. We also have several Wednesday evening rehearsals scheduled throughout the season.  Volunteers are needed and welcome in all sections.  The next Wednesday night rehearsal will happen September 15.

Bell Choir: The Handbell Choir plays approximately once per month at the 10 AM service. Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 PM and new ringers are always welcome. While prior ringing experience is not required it is very helpful to know a little bit about reading music and rhythms.

Children's Music Program: Summer schedule: Every other Wednesday beginning July 7 at 5 p.m.  The kids will be working on the musical "Cool in the Furnace."  Schedule from September through May: This program for children ages 5 to 12 meets every Wednesday at 5 p.m. 45 minute sessions include singing, chime ringing, playing different kinds of instruments, games and learning about music in the church. At 5:45 p.m. the children have the option to join the Sewing Group in the Parish Hall for a light supper, usually a hearty soup and different kinds of bread. Parents who are not part of the sewing group should plan to pick the kids up by 6 p.m., although they are also welcome to come early and eat. We ask that you let us know in advance if you plan to do that so enough food can be available.

All children will learn songs to sing in our worship service several times a year. While we welcome participants from outside of the church community, this is part of our South Church worship experience and the children are asked to participate to that extent.

Contact Larry Picard for more information.

CityMusic Springfield

Introducing CityMusic Springfield: An Outreach of South Congregational Church UCC.  It is a melding of a house concert series called Mattunes (so called because the events took place in historic Mattoon Street houses) and events that were already being scheduled at South Church.  Our vision is to bring culture-seekers to us and at the same time make us more visible in the wider city, so the series includes concerts here at South and in other venues, like historic or otherwise interesting homes and buildings.  It begins on September 26 at 1 p.m. with An Afternoon of Opera, featuring members of South Church’s Chancel Choir.  Keep Saturday, October 30 at 7 p.m. open  for Phantasmagoria: a Halloween Organ Concert, which will be performed by members of the Springfield Chapter of the American Guild of Organists who will be in costume and will take turns at the South Church organ playing pieces that are both scary and comical.  The fall portion of the series concludes with Sweet Voices on the Autumn Wind, which is the theme of a concert on November 21, 2010 at 3 p.m. when Anthology: A Vocal Ensemble sings at the Urbschat home in Forest Park.  Want to learn more?  Click here for a PDF of the season brochure.
